SPORTS COMPLEX

Declared Open on the 10th of May 2001 the Royal College Sports Complex (RCSC), probably is the best amongst schools in Sri Lanka today with many indoor and outdoor sports as well as a complete fitness centre under one roof, will be breaking new ground when it offers its international class facilities to schools, clubs and Associations.

The Royal College Sports Complex Committee (RCSCC), having made the dream of each and every Royalist, young and old, a reality, has now decided to offer the services and facilities to other schools, clubs and associations at special rates. The RCSC has been offering these services under three categories - present Royalists, members of the Royal College Union (Old Boys) and general public.

Situated in Colombo's plush residential area, surrounding leading Colleges, international schools, university and many national sports associations in and around Cinnamon Gardens, the Royal College Sports Complex will be offering its services to those who are not fortunate to have their own.

Thanks to the untiring efforts made by the RCSCC, headed by none other than that dynamic chief of Singer Sri Lanka, Hemaka Amarasuriya and his dedicated team of officials, the Royalists young and old could boast of one of the best sports complexes in the country. The entire project has been done according to a perfect plan, to make the maximum use of plot of land, adjoining Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha between Reid Avenue and Baudhaloka Mawatha, which was earlier called the Royal College rugby grounds. Besides the indoor Stadium, gymnasium, pavilion at their usual College grounds at Reid Avenue, the new RCSC is used for both indoor an outdoor sports. The outdoor stadium facing the main pavilion is used for rugby, soccer, baseball and hockey. The Indoor Stadium provides facilities of international class for badminton, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, netball and boxing.

There are three badminton courts of international class, with the very same state of the art court at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, the only difference being the lesser number of spectators which could be accommodated due to the limited ground area. However, the three classy badminton courts have a spectator capacity of 250 while there are two separate badminton courts for warm-up and training purposes during peak hours. The multi purpose indoor stadium which hosts other indoor sports has a seating capacity of 450. There are two separate squash courts with a spectator capacity of 150.

The most notable feature is the ultra modern gymnasium, which could be compared with any top class venue in Sri Lanka. With an investment of equipment of over Rs. eight million, by a hired operator, there are two separate fitness centres for school boys and adults.

The rugby grounds which is only second to the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium has a seating capacity for 2,500 with a further 6,000 on the terraces.

Adding more weight to many facilities are a 120-unit car park (including 50 in the basement), a modern cafeteria serving both eastern, western and Chinese food, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, classy players changing rooms, top class media box at the rugby venue and a centralized and decentralized public address system The efficient ground staff have been doing a wonderful job to make everyone's stay at RCSC a comfortable one.

Many schools are already making use of the facilities at special rates, when the Royalists are not having their workouts. The bookings accepted from the members, corporate and individual, national, regional and local sports associations, NSAs and clubs.
